Mike Portnoy quits Dream Theater

Posted in Features on 2010/09/09 by sturgeonmusic

25 years down the line, the bands founder and kick arse prog drummer Mike Portnoy quits the band. He revealed the news this morning over Twitter and Facebook, and this is surely a sad day in the bands history, for the fans and for the future of the bands make-up.

Below are some clippings from his press and fan statement, MP + DT – we’ll miss you!

“I am about to write something I never imagined I’d ever write.

“After 25 years, I have decided to leave DREAM THEATER… the band I founded, led and truly loved for a quarter of a century.

“To many people this will come as a complete shock, and will also likely be misunderstood by some, but please believe me that it is not a hasty decision…it is something I have struggled with for the last year or so….

“After having had such amazing experiences playing with HAIL!,TRANSATLANTIC and AVENGED SEVENFOLD this past year, I have sadly come to the conclusion that I have recently had more fun and better personal relations with these other projects than I have for a while now inDREAM THEATER.

“Please don’t misinterpret me, I love the DREAM THEATER guys dearly and have a long history, friendship and bond that runs incredibly deep with them… it’s just that I think we are in serious need of a little break.

He continues….

“While it truly hurts for me to even think of a DREAM THEATER withoutMike Portnoy (hell, my father named the band!!), I do not want to stand in their way…so I have decided to sacrifice myself and simply leave the band so as to not hold them back against their wishes.

“I’m sorry to all the disappointed DREAM THEATER fans around the world… I really tried to salvage the situation and make it work… I honestly just wanted a break (not a split)… but happiness cannot be forced, it needs to come from within.

“You DREAM THEATER fans are the greatest fans in the world and as you all know, I have always busted my ass for you guys and I hope that you will stay with me on my future musical journey, wherever it may lead me…. (and as you all know my work ethic, there will surely be no shortage of future Mike Portnoy projects!)”

Justin Bieber – remixed

Posted in Features on 2010/09/08 by sturgeonmusic

He’s a boy with a huge fan base, great success and has achieved all of this at a very young age. He’s done very well for himself you might say? Yet if you search around on the internet, it doesn’t take long to find some accusation, hate-blog or piss take picture that turns him into a bit of an icon for hatred.

Personally, I can’t say I’ve really listened to his music or say I want to, however after hearing this song today, I would happily listen to this for hours on end. Yes, I really am talking about me listening to Justin Bieber.

I discovered this amazing remix earlier today and it’s been played non-stop in my room since then. I’m surprised I am even awake enough to post a coherent blog let alone describe its style!

Ever heard those sound scape style songs that become instantly legendary? Things like Massive Attack, Moby, This Will Destroy You and those famous musical scores? This is right on the nail if you like listening to these styles on a chilled out evening or at a party.

Its not one of those trippy sound scape’s  that people say you have to be stoned to enjoy either, this truly is epic. And yes, Justin sounds amazing…. slowed down 8 times.

Song of the Week – BMTH (remixed)

Posted in Music Reviews on 2010/09/05 by sturgeonmusic

Thats right, its time for me to start my old routine of song of the week and bring it back to my blog. In somewhat different terms this week to the styles I have been reviewing lately as well.

If you haven’t guessed already by the title and (lovely) cd cover, its Bring Me The Horizon – however with a very nice twist to their usual hardcore metal sound. Sleep With One Eye Open was a very successful track off of their last album, Suicide Season and as with most bands nowadays, it was only a matter of time before it received the Dub-Step treatment.

Its been played in nearly every club I’ve been too lately, and after hearing one of my friends say this killer line – “This is filthy, I might even have to take a shower.” I knew  it had to be this weeks stand out track.

Tek One provides the remix, combining the harsh vocals with spacey piano, and the usual ridiculously heavy synth sounds that makes Dub what it is. Its on Spotify as well as Youtube, so if you’re in the mood for something which fits the bill of the quote above, look no further.
